Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common type. They are made of high-grade stainless steel. Today's metal braces are smaller, more comfortable and more attractive.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material. They are most popular with adult patients, due to their cosmetic appeal. The only drawback to ceramic brackets are that they are more fragile, and the elastic ties can discolor between orthodontic visits.
Elastics
Elastics (rubber band) wear can be a very important part of the orthodontic treatment to help finish perfecting the bite. The following is an outline of wearing elastics and what to expect.
WEARING INSTRUCTIONS:
- 24 hours a day (unless Dr. Bridgham has told the parent otherwise)
- Eat meals with elastics on - this is very important to maximize tooth movement
- Take elastics off only long enough to brush your teeth
- Apply new elastics 2 to 3 times daily
- Always carry additional elastics in case one breaks or is lost.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- Some soreness in the first few days is common
- Tylenol or Aleve will help with any soreness, as well as warm salt-water rinses
- Soreness will disappear if elastics are worn properly
- Failure to wear 24 hours a day will result in constantly sore teeth
- Rapid progress will occur if the elastics are worn properly! Slow or NO progress will occur if the elastics are worn under 24 hours a day.
